Karachi youth dies in SIU custody; police file manslaughter case instead of murder
A young man, identified as Muhammad Irfan, allegedly died due to custodial torture while in the custody of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of Karachi Police, sparking outrage and questions over police conduct.
According to officials and the contents of the FIR, the case (No. 443/25) has been registered at the Saddar Police Station under Sections 319 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code (manslaughter and common intention) on behalf of the state, instead of the victim’s family.
The complainant is the Station House Officer (SHO) of the SIU.
The FIR states that Irfan’s health deteriorated during interrogation and that he fell unconscious.
At the time, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Abid and Sarfaraz were questioning him. The complainant claimed that other officers shifted Irfan to a hospital without informing him, where he was later pronounced dead.
The FIR further mentions that the case against the detainees under investigation was of a “dubious nature.” Six SIU personnel have been named in the case.
However, Irfan’s family has yet to have a murder case registered, saying they are still waiting for the authorities to take action against those responsible.
