Iran signals possible FIFA World Cup withdrawal after US attack
Tensions have escalated following a U.S. attack on Iran, casting doubt over Iran’s participation in this year’s FIFA World Cup scheduled to be held across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, said the national team’s involvement in the tournament was uncertain under the current circumstances.
“It is difficult to participate in the World Cup under these circumstances,” he said, signalling that Iran could consider withdrawing from the global event.
The World Cup is set to take place in June and July, with matches hosted across North America. Iran is scheduled to play their opening group-stage match against New Zealand on June 16.
No further official decision regarding Iran’s participation has been announced.
