Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in any Humanities subject, with a preference for English Literature, Philosophy, History or Linguistics
If you do not have formal higher education, we are open to candidates from other backgrounds. Our main requirement is strong English writing skills, a sense of news and ability to process information

Experience

Ideal candidates would have some newsroom experience, either as interns or sub-editors. We are open to fresh graduates, provided they are willing to undergo training and a trial period.

Core competence

To work closely with the digital team and TV reporters so digital coverage is ensured of key audience-friendly English stories for the website.
To develop carefully selected, in-depth, well-written English news stories for the website from multiple sources that range from Aaj News reporting, packages, beepers, breaking news, to government notifications and news that surfaces on social media. This often involves crosschecking or getting additional information from reporters or anchors/analysts.

A sub-editor should not need to have their copy vetted for basic grammar and spelling. They should be able to bring together a full story, covering important angles where possible. Where they do original reporting to add to a story, they will receive credit in a byline. Sub-editors are encouraged to do their own reporting, own stories and video especially.

Career progression involves next entering a role as a Senior Sub-editor.
