Sindh links vehicle number plates to CNIC under amended motor law
Vehicle owners in Sindh will now legally own their number plates registered against their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC), following the enforcement of the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2024, according to an official notification.
The Sindh government said the new law allows number plates to be issued and owned in the name of the CNIC holder, bringing a major change to the vehicle registration framework.
Under the amended act, two new number plate series linked to CNICs have also been introduced. The notification was issued by the Sindh Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department.
Officials said vehicle owners will now be able to transfer their existing CNIC-registered number plates to another vehicle, making it easier to retain preferred or special numbers.
The government has also fixed fees for obtaining special or personalised numbers. Citizens will have to pay between Rs300,000 and Rs1 million, depending on the chosen number series.
Authorities said the move is aimed at improving transparency in the registration system while offering greater convenience to vehicle owners across the province.
