Pakistan, Sri Lanka agree to deepen security, sports cooperation
Federal Interior and Narcotics Control Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Monday held a series of meetings with senior officials of Sri Lanka, agreeing to strengthen cooperation in security, law enforcement, and sports.
During his meeting with Sri Lankan Interior and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala, both sides agreed to enhance institutional cooperation between their interior ministries.
They decided to improve coordination to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking and discussed joint training programmes for police and paramilitary forces.
Mohsin Naqvi offered training opportunities for Sri Lankan police officers at Pakistan’s National Police Academy, saying that exchange programmes would help improve professional capacity in both countries. He also invited his counterpart to visit Pakistan.
The Sri Lankan minister said his country would continue to promote cooperation with Pakistan in areas of mutual interest.
Separately, Mohsin Naqvi met Sri Lankan Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Sunil Kumara Gamage, where both sides agreed to expand collaboration in sports, particularly cricket.
They decided to promote joint initiatives to strengthen sporting ties, and Naqvi extended an invitation to the sports minister to visit Pakistan.
In another meeting with Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Sampath Thuyacontha, the two sides discussed security cooperation and defence-related matters.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral security ties. The Sri Lankan official said his country had also suffered from terrorism and acknowledged Pakistan’s strong support in counterterrorism efforts.
“We are deeply grateful for Pakistan’s assistance,” he said.
Mohsin Naqvi said Pakistan-Sri Lanka security relations had remained strong in every phase and would continue to grow through mutual trust and cooperation.
