Yasmin Rashid challenges May 9 convictions in Lahore High Court
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr Yasmin Rashid has filed appeals in the Lahore High Court (LHC) challenging her convictions in three cases related to the May 9 incidents.
Through her counsel, Rana Mudassar Umar, Dr Rashid urged the court to declare the sentences handed down by the trial court null and void.
In her petitions, she contended that the trial court failed to properly assess the facts of the cases, and concluded the trials in undue haste, resulting in what she termed illegal convictions.
The appeals argue that the trial court completed the proceedings without a fair evaluation of evidence and legal requirements, and therefore, the sentences should be set aside.
Dr Rashid has also requested the High Court to suspend the sentences in all three cases until final decisions on the appeals are announced.
Dr Rashid has challenged her convictions in cases registered at Gulberg, Nasirabad and Race Course police stations.
The petitions further seek the immediate suspension of punishment during the pendency of the appeals, maintaining that the convictions are legally unsustainable and warrant judicial intervention.
The LHC is expected to take up the appeals for hearing at a later date.
