Obesity, diabetes could now affect US visa approval
US President Donald Trump has introduced a new policy that could deny visas to applicants suffering from chronic conditions such as obesity and diabetes.
According to foreign media reports, the US State Department has issued fresh guidelines to American embassies and consulates worldwide in this regard.
Previously, visa applicants were primarily screened for communicable diseases such as tuberculosis.
The revised rules now expand the list to include additional health conditions.
Under the new instructions, visa officers are required to assess whether an applicant suffers from a long-term or costly medical condition and whether granting entry could pose a financial burden on the US government.
The statement from officials notes that “the applicant’s health must be carefully considered. Conditions such as heart disease, respiratory illnesses, cancer, diabetes, metabolic and neurological disorders, and mental health issues can require millions of dollars in care”.
Visa officers are also instructed to confirm whether applicants can cover their medical expenses independently, without relying on US government aid.
Family members’ health conditions are recommended for separate evaluation.
The State Department has not issued an official comment on these reports, leaving it unclear whether the policy is currently in effect or still under consideration.
