Maryam Nawaz sets three-month timeline for police reforms
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Sunday set a three-month timeline to implement a comprehensive package of police reforms aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and public trust.
Presiding over a high-level meeting, the chief minister outlined key measures, including the installation of “pink buttons” outside police stations for immediate redress of citizens’ complaints, as well as audio and video recording of investigations to ensure accountability.
An online system to track FIR will be introduced to monitor police performance, while 10 officers at each police station will be equipped with body cameras.
Citizens will also be able to file FIRs online for missing or lost identity cards and other documents.
Maryam Nawaz instructed police to treat every citizen with respect and resolve minor complaints within two to three hours.
Officers will also be required to collect public feedback to enhance transparency and accountability.
The reform package covers women’s safety, protection of children in educational institutions, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and measures to restore public confidence in the police.
Maryam Nawaz emphasised that the public should only fear criminals and directed the police to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against corruption.
The meeting was informed that overall crime in Punjab has decreased by 48 per cent, while major crimes have dropped by 80 per cent.
Effective complaint handling and timely responses last year also helped reduce negative public feedback.
Under the new plan, 14,000 body cameras and 700 pink buttons will be installed across Punjab.
Mobile police stations and a citizen management e-tag system will also be launched to facilitate easier public access.
The chief minister directed that police reforms be implemented under short-, medium-, and long-term strategies to make policing more effective, transparent, and citizen-friendly.
