SC allows Salman Safdar to meet Imran Khan in jail today
The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Barrister Salman Safdar to meet PTI founder Imran Khan in Adiala Jail in connection with the Toshakhana case, and appointed the lawyer as a “Friend of the Court”.
While hearing a case, a two-member bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi ordered Salman Safdar to visit the prison, evaluate Khan’s condition, and review the facilities available to him, submitting a detailed written report to the court by tomorrow.
The chief justice specifically instructed the attorney-general to ensure that no obstacle arises during Salman Safdar’s prison visit.
The court told Safdar that he could directly approach the court if he faced any issues during the meeting.
Additionally, the Supreme Court sought a report from the prison superintendent regarding Imran Khan to bring all facts to light.
During proceedings, the attorney-general informed the court that a report covering Imran Khan’s detention in Attock Jail from August 5 to August 18, 2023, had already been submitted.
However, the court designated Salman Safdar as amicus curiae (Friend of the Court) to provide an updated assessment of the situation.
Senior PTI lawyer Latif Khosa also complained to the court that he had not been allowed tomeet Imran Khan.
The chief justice clarified that Salman Safdar would proceed to the prison today in accordance with the court’s orders.
Speaking to the media outside the court, Salman Safdar said he had been entrusted with a significant responsibility and would carry out his duties as assigned by the Supreme Court.
He added that his meeting with Khan is scheduled for 2pm, after which he will prepare his report.
The Supreme Court announced that after reviewing Salman Safdar’s report, further hearings in the Toshakhana case will resume on February 12.
