Meta to test premium subscriptions on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp
Meta is preparing to test premium subscription tiers on its three most popular apps, Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, signalling a potential shift in how the company monetises its platforms beyond advertising.
The company confirmed the plans to TechCrunch on January 26, 2026, saying subscriptions will offer exclusive features focused on productivity, creativity, and artificial intelligence, while keeping the core apps free for all users.
Each app will feature its own set of perks rather than a single unified subscription.
Early developer insights and leaks suggest Instagram’s premium tier could include tools like unlimited audience lists, the ability to see followers who don’t follow back, and viewing Stories without notifying the poster.
Meta also plans to integrate its recently acquired Manus AI agent — reportedly a nearly $2 billion purchase — into the subscription offerings and explore access to AI-powered tools such as Vibes, its AI video creation system.
Details for Facebook and WhatsApp subscriptions remain limited, though beta alerts suggest potential features could include enhanced controls and ad management.
Reports indicate WhatsApp may offer a subscription to remove ads from areas like Statuses and Channels.
The company said subscription tests will begin in the coming months, with offerings adjusted based on user feedback.
The move reflects Meta’s broader strategy to diversify revenue amid pressures on digital advertising and mirrors trends from other platforms offering premium features, such as Snapchat+.
