Lahore university student recovering after suicide attempt
The condition of the university student who allegedly attempted suicide has improved at Lahore General Hospital, hospital officials and medical experts said on Thursday.
A special medical board, including psychiatrists and psychologists, has been closely monitoring the female student’s physical and mental health.
The board conducted detailed discussions with the student identified as Fatima and her family, and a video of the interaction has been released to demonstrate the counselling process.
Professor Jodat Saleem, principal of the hospital, said, “By the grace of God, the student is now out of danger. She is showing steady improvement and moving rapidly toward recovery. Our doctors’ round-the-clock efforts and professional expertise are paying off.”
Jodat Saleem added that the hospital will continue providing the student with the best possible medical facilities while prioritising her mental health alongside physical treatment.
Dr Faiza Athar, Head of Psychiatry, and psychologist Aliya Sadaf, both members of the special medical board, conducted counselling sessions with the student and her family to address the emotional and psychological aspects of her recovery.
Professor Saleem emphasised that the board is closely reviewing her condition and ensuring ongoing support.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Women Protection Authority (PWPA) chairperson, Hina Parvez Butt, also visited the hospital and met with the student and her family.
She confirmed that the student, who had been on a ventilator, has regained consciousness and is showing significant improvement.
“Saving her life is our top priority,” Butt said. “The hospital administration is ensuring strict monitoring at every stage of treatment. She will receive the best medical, psychological, and rehabilitation services available.”
Hina Parvez Butt added that a detailed investigation into all aspects of the incident is being carried out, including family pressures related to marriage and education. Forensic examinations of the student’s last calls and mobile records prior to the incident are also underway.
“All facts surrounding the incident, before and after, will be presented in accordance with the law,” she said.
