Pakistan and India on Thursday exchanged lists of prisoners and nuclear installations in pursuance of the Agreement on Consular Access, 2008.

The agreement requires both countries to share the lists of prisoners in each other’s custody on 1st January and 1st July, every year.

According to officials, the exchange took place simultaneously in Islamabad and New Delhi, with the cooperation of the consular departments of both countries.

The exchange of prisoners’ lists is aimed at ensuring the legal and humanitarian rights of detainees held in each country, as well as facilitating consular access, sources added.

At the same time, the two sides also shared details of their nuclear facilities, a measure intended to strengthen mutual confidence and ensure the timely exchange of information under existing arms control agreements.

The sources said the step is considered significant for long-term cooperation and transparency between Pakistan and India.
