Naqvi vows to expel all illegal Afghan residents ‘at all costs’
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday told the Senate that investigators have traced the perpetrators of the Islamabad and Wana suicide attacks, confirming that both attackers were Afghan nationals.
Speaking during the Senate session, Naqvi said the Islamabad blast on Tuesday was carried out by an Afghan suicide bomber targeting a police patrol near a lower court. The explosion killed 12 people and injured 27 others.
He added that the suicide bomber who rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the main gate of Wana Cadet College in South Waziristan on Monday also belonged to Afghanistan.
Security forces had successfully neutralised other militants involved in that attack.
Naqvi vowed that all illegal Afghan residents would be expelled from the country “at all costs,” emphasising that Pakistan could no longer tolerate the use of its territory for cross-border terrorism.
Security assurances to Sri Lankan team
Addressing the Senate, the interior minister also revealed that following the Islamabad blast, the Sri Lankan cricket team initially expressed a desire to return home due to security concerns.
However, after a series of high-level contacts and assurances, the team decided to continue its tour.
According to Naqvi, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir personally contacted the Sri Lankan defence minister to assure complete security arrangements.
The Sri Lankan president also spoke directly to his national team, encouraging them to proceed with the ongoing series.
Naqvi said the Sri Lankan team has been granted “state guest-level security,” with all matches now scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi under strict protection.
