The joint parliamentary committee on law and justice has approved amendments to Article 243 of the Constitution, following detailed consultations, sources said on Sunday.

The approval includes provisions for the establishment of the federal constitutional court and other significant clauses.

During the session of the standing committees, three additional amendments were proposed by government-allied parties.

According to the sources, the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment has undergone a comprehensive review, with final decisions on the additional amendments expected by Monday.

Coalition parties, including the Awami National Party (ANP), Balochistan National Party (BNP), and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), also presented their proposals during the session.

Regarding the ANP’s proposal to rename Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the government requested more time to deliberate.

Similarly, additional time was sought on the amendment to increase the number of seats in the Balochistan Assembly.

Final decisions on both matters are expected after further discussions.

The sources confirmed that the clause granting lifetime immunity to the President has also been approved.

The committee approved an amendment to extend the period for disposing of pending cases from six months to one year.

Cases not pursued within a year will be considered automatically disposed of.

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar told reporters that work on the clauses of the 27th Amendment was nearly complete, adding that discussions had taken place regarding the renaming of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He said proposals from MQM and Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) are still under consideration.

It must be noted that the amendment will require two-thirds support in both houses, meaning 64 votes in the Senate and 224 votes in the National Assembly.

Opposition benches in the Senate, with 30 members, are expected to oppose the amendment.

In a separate development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will host a dinner for coalition senators.

According to the prime minister, the constitutional amendment was prepared to strengthen federal-provincial relations and serve the broader national interest.

He praised all coalition partners, including PPP, MQM, and IPP, for their contributions.
