An important meeting of the federal cabinet will be held today (Saturday) at 10am at the Prime Minister’s House to deliberate on the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.

According to sources, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will chair the meeting via video link from Baku.

The meeting will deliberate on the 27th Amendment in light of suggestions put forward by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The sources said that if the cabinet approves the draft, it is likely to be tabled in the Senate later today.

The sources noted that the meeting was originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to a deadlock among the political parties.

The cabinet is expected to consult on the proposed changes as well as discuss the future political strategy during today’s session.

Earlier, speaking to the media after the meeting of the PPP Central Executive Committee (CEC), party chairman Bilawal Bhutto said the committee had reached a consensus on three points of the constitutional amendment.

Bilawal said the PPP would support an amendment to Article 243, adding that constitutional courts should be established.

“Other aspects of the Charter of Democracy should also be reviewed,” he said.

He further stated that under the NFC Award, the provinces’ share of funds could increase but not decrease.

“We should discuss the unfinished agenda of the Charter of Democracy and seek consensus on other clauses included in the 27th Amendment process,” he added.

Meanwhile, PML-N leader Barrister Aqeel Malik has said that three votes were required to get the amendment passed in the Senate.

“We have assured the MQM of our support on the amendment to Article 140-A, and we are also in contact with independent members. We stand with the provinces’ rights. The number of judges in constitutional courts could be increased to nine,” he said.
