The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Thursday made clear during its Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting that it will not compromise on the 18th Amendment or the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award, party sources said.

According to insiders, the meeting, which continued late into the evening, focused on constitutional and political issues amid ongoing discussions about possible amendments.

Members agreed that under no circumstances should the 18th Amendment be rolled back, emphasising that provincial autonomy was a core achievement of the democratic process.

Sources said no formal draft proposal for any constitutional changes had been presented. The PPP leadership prepared key talking points following a recent meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Party members maintained that returning key subjects like health and education to the federal domain was impractical and that the NFC Award’s existing resource-sharing formula must remain intact.

According to party sources, the PPP leadership appeared largely aligned on Article 243 and reached around 70 per cent consensus on issues related to the formation of a constitutional court and the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner.

The CEC meeting was part of the party’s broader consultations on the government’s proposed constitutional reforms and their implications for the balance of power between the federation and the provinces.
