Most Americans, including a majority of Democrats and a significant portion of Republicans, believe the United States should recognise Palestinian statehood, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, suggesting that former President Donald Trump’s stance on the issue is at odds with public opinion.

The six-day survey, which concluded on Monday, found 59% of respondents supported US recognition of a Palestinian state, while 33% opposed it, and the rest were unsure or did not respond.

Among political groups, 80% of Democrats and 41% of Republicans backed recognition, while just over half of Republicans (53%) opposed it.

A growing number of countries, including Britain, Canada, France, and Australia, have formally recognised Palestinian statehood in recent weeks, drawing condemnation from Israel.

Israel’s bombardment of Gaza has destroyed large parts of the territory following the October 2023 Hamas attack, which killed hundreds in Israel and triggered the ongoing conflict.

About 60% of poll respondents said Israel’s response in Gaza was excessive, while 32% disagreed.

Trump, who has remained a strong supporter of Israel, recently welcomed a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, raising hopes for lasting peace.

The poll found 51% of Americans said Trump “deserves significant credit” if peace efforts succeed, while 42% disagreed.

Among Democrats, only one in 20 approved of Trump’s overall performance, yet one in four said he should get credit if the ceasefire holds.

Despite renewed tensions over the weekend threatening to derail the truce, US diplomats are pressing Israel and Hamas to stay committed to the plan.

Key issues, including Hamas’s disarmament, further Israeli troop withdrawals, and Gaza’s future governance, remain unresolved.

Trump’s approval rating on foreign policy has shown a slight uptick, rising to 38% in the latest poll from 33% earlier this month, his highest since July.

The Reuters/Ipsos survey was conducted online among 4,385 respondents nationwide and carries a margin of error of two percentage points.
