In a milestone for gender inclusion in Pakistan’s public transport sector, Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has inducted its first female driver, Ruth Maryam.

She is currently undergoing professional training to operate the city’s fleet of modern buses.

Originally from Mianwali, Ruth moved to Wah Cantt with her family at the age of 12 and has been living in Peshawar for the past seven years.

A lifelong enthusiast of motorcycles and cars, she said her passion for driving inspired her to learn the skill and eventually apply to the BRT.

“I wanted to drive bigger vehicles, so I joined the BRT. I’ve completed my training and am proud to be part of the team,” she said, adding that she never faced any personal or social challenges in pursuing her career.

Ruth encouraged other women to follow their ambitions.

“Women can do anything. Move forward and achieve your goals,” she said.

Transport officials hailed her induction as a progressive step for women’s empowerment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Earlier in Lahore, Nida Saleh became the first woman to officially operate the Orange Line Metro Train.

After completing six months of technical training, she has now taken charge as a full-time train driver.
