Trump launches scathing attack on Zahraan Mamdani after NYC primary win
President Donald Trump has sharply criticized 33-year-old Democratic Socialist Zahraan Mamdani after his unexpected win in the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City on Tuesday night. Trump took to his social media platform, ‘‘Truth Social’’, calling Mamdani a “hundred percent communist lunatic.”
He stated, “Zahraan Mamdani has won the Democratic primary and is now on his way to becoming mayor. We’ve seen extreme leftists before, but this is beyond the pale. He’s very painful, his voice is unbearable, and he’s not very bright.”
Trump did not stop there; he also targeted Democratic Congress members who endorsed Mamdani, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He mockingly referred to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as “our great Palestinian senator,” accusing him of submitting to Mamdani.
Mamdani, who has represented Astoria, Queens, in the state assembly since 2021, is now a leading candidate for the city’s top office. His campaign includes promises for free public buses, a cap on rent increases, and the establishment of public grocery stores, funded by a proposed $10 billion tax on businesses and the wealthy.
His strong stance in favor of Palestine has heightened his visibility. Mamdani has declared that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits New York, he would order his arrest, in light of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in November 2024.
Additionally, he has participated in pro-Palestinian protests and supported the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which has drawn criticism from pro-Israel groups.
Political analysts suggest that Mamdani’s victory could mark a significant turning point for progressive policies in American politics.
The Republican Party is expected to leverage this outcome as evidence of the Democratic Party’s leftward shift, as national attention increasingly turns to this pivotal race in New York City.
