Almost as prestigious as winning the Palme d’Or, the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize, is being on the jury that picks the winner.

Artists from around the world are picked to sit on the jury, with one member designated as jury president.

Recently, more than 350 figures from the cinema world including Hollywood stars Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon condemned “genocide” in Gaza in an open letter published Monday on the eve of the Cannes Festival.

JULIETTE BINOCHE

Renowned French actor Juliette Binoche, who has won several major awards in a career spanning over four decades, will head this year’s jury.

Among her various accolades are an Oscar and a BAFTA for “The English Patient,” France’s prestigious Cesar, as well as prizes at the Cannes, Venice and Berlin film festivals. She takes over from the head of last year’s jury, U.S. director Greta Gerwig, who was behind the smash summer 2023 hit “Barbie.”

HALLE BERRY

The only black woman to ever win a best actress Oscar in 2002, for “Monster’s Ball”, Halle Berry has several iconic roles in major movie franchises under her belt, including as Storm in the “X-Men”, Batman’s enemy Catwoman in the film of the same name, and Jinx in the James Bond film “Die Another Day” with Pierce Brosnan.

PAYAL KAPADIA

The Mumbai-born filmmaker Payal Kapadia made a name for herself as the first Indian director to win the Cannes Film Festival’s Grand Prix, the second-highest prize after the Palme d’Or, in 2024 for her first feature “All We Imagine As Light.”

ALBA ROHRWACHER

A regular face at the Cannes Film Festival, Italian actor Alba Rohrwacher has appeared in several competition films, especially with her director sister Alice Rohrwacher, including “The Wonders”, “Happy as Lazzaro” and “La Chimera.”

LEILA SLIMANI

The winner of France’s prestigious Prix Goncourt for her novel “Chanson Douce”, which translates as lullaby, Leila Slimani has also been an active campaigner for women’s rights and against sexual violence.

DIEUDO HAMADI

Longtime documentary filmmaker Dieudo Hamadi has played an important role in capturing the troubles of his homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo, on screen. His “Downstream to Kinshasa” was the first film from the country to be included in Cannes’ official selection in 2020.

HONG SANG-SOO

A Cannes veteran, South Korean director Hong Sang-soo has been in competition for the festival’s top prize four times, and even used it as the setting for one of his films, “Claire’s Camera”, starring French actor Isabelle Huppert and South Korean actor Kim Min-hee, in 2017.

CARLOS REYGADAS

Acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas returns to Cannes as a jury member after winning best director in 2012 for “Post Tenebras Lux” and taking the jury prize in 2007 for “Silent Light.”

JEREMY STRONG

Known for his iconic portrayal of Kendall Roy in HBO’s series “Succession”, U.S. actor Jeremy Strong has received an Emmy, a Tony Award and a Golden Globe for his performances, and he was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Donald Trump mentor Roy Cohn in the 2024 Cannes competitor “The Apprentice.”
