Power companies petition NEPRA to reduce electricity tariffs
Power distribution companies across the country have filed a petition with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking a reduction in electricity tariffs.
They have requested a decrease of more than one rupee per unit under the quarterly adjustment mechanism.
According to the petition, the companies expect a reduction of three paisas per unit under the monthly adjustment for March, and up to one rupee per unit through the quarterly adjustment.
If approved, this relief is projected to amount to Rs51.49 billion for consumers.
The petition pertains to the third quarterly adjustment of the fiscal year 2024–25. It also includes a proposal to cut capacity charges by Rs47.124 billion.
NEPRA will conduct a hearing tomorrow to review the petitions related to the quarterly adjustment and the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA).
The petition further states that in March, the companies generated 8.409 billion units of electricity at an average cost of Rs. 9.22 per unit, compared to the reference cost of Rs. 9.25 per unit.
If NEPRA approves the petition, consumers are likely to experience a significant reduction in electricity bills in the coming months.
