A 21-year-old youth, Nauman, lost his life after a stray kite string slit his throat in Lahore late Tuesday night, once again raising questions over the enforcement of the ban on kite flying.

According to police and family sources, Nauman, a resident of Fane Road, Mozang, worked two jobs — with the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) during the day and at a medical store in the evening.

The fatal incident occurred near Sodiwal when he was returning home from work on his motorcycle.

He sustained a deep neck injury after the razor-sharp string wrapped around his throat. Despite being rushed to the hospital, doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Nauman, the eldest of four siblings and the sole breadwinner of his family, was mourned by relatives and neighbours as his body reached home.

Locals expressed outrage over the continued sale and use of metal and glass-coated strings, calling it a failure of law enforcement.

Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz took notice of the incident and directed officials to submit a detailed report.

Despite a province-wide ban, kite-flying incidents have continued to cause injuries and fatalities in Lahore and surrounding areas.

Earlier this week, a man and his daughter were injured in Bata Pur, while another youth was hurt in Muridke due to stray kite strings.
