Shehbaz urges UN to suspend Israel’s membership at Doha summit

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday urged the United Nations to suspend Israel’s membership, calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Palestine.

He was addressing an extraordinary Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, which brought together leaders from more than 50 nations, including members of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to discuss Israel’s recent strike on Qatar.

Sharif denounced the attack as “naked aggression” and said it was part of Israel’s reckless policies, not an isolated incident.

He expressed Pakistan’s solidarity with Qatar and praised the Gulf nation’s role as an honest mediator for global peace.

The prime minister movingly recalled the plight of Palestinian children, citing the story of a 10-year-old killed after walking miles for bread.

“Injustices have reached an intolerable level,” he said, adding that Israel must be held accountable for crimes against humanity.

Reiterating Pakistan’s support for a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital, Sharif pressed the UN to act decisively against Israeli violations.

Sideline diplomacy

On the sidelines of the summit, Sharif held meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He also met leaders from Tajikistan, Egypt, and Malaysia.

Abbas warmly embraced Sharif, highlighting Pakistan’s consistent support for the Palestinian cause.

The Pakistani delegation included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.
