Weather alert: More rains expected till August 8, flood risk in Punjab

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday warned of more rains across upper and central Pakistan until August 8, with potential flooding in parts of Punjab.

In its advisory, the NDMA highlighted a sharp rise in water flow in the River Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala, which surged from 28,657 cusecs to 33,653 cusecs within an hour.

The authority warned that further heavy rains between August 5 and 7 in northern regions could increase water flow in both the Sutlej and Beas rivers.

The alert also noted that India’s Bhakra Dam is currently 55% full, while the Pong Dam has reached 56% capacity.

Any additional discharge from these dams could intensify the flow, possibly resulting in low-level flooding in the Sutlej near Ganda Singh Wala later this week.

NDMA has directed local administrations to remain prepared for emergency response, drainage operations, and potential evacuations. All relevant agencies have been advised to take preemptive measures and maintain communication with the NDMA for timely updates.

The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas and stay away from fast-flowing streams, submerged roads, and weak bridges. Authorities have also been asked to ensure dewatering equipment and pumps are ready for deployment in low-lying areas.

Urban flooding warning for Lahore

Separately, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has forecast urban flooding in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Gujranwala due to expected heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday.

A public alert has been issued, and administrative units have been placed on high alert in the provincial capital.

The PDMA said the risk of urban flooding in Lahore is particularly serious, urging all departments to remain vigilant and take precautionary steps.
