Lyari building collapse: Sindh govt forms five-member inquiry committee

In the aftermath of the tragic collapse of a five-storey residential building in Karachi’s Lyari area, the Chief Secretary Sindh has constituted a five-member inquiry committee to investigate the causes of the incident and recommend preventive measures for the future.

The notification issued on Tuesday stated that the committee has been tasked with identifying the reasons behind the collapse, determining why the building was not evacuated despite prior notices, and suggesting steps to avoid such incidents in the future.

The committee will be led by Commissioner Karachi Hassan Naqvi, while other members include Ayesha Hameed, Special Secretary Local Government; Asif Nadeem Ahmed, Director Complaints and Dangerous Buildings, SBCA; Asif Ali Langa, Deputy Director SBCA; and other relevant officials.

The committee has been directed to submit its preliminary findings within 48 hours.

The inquiry follows revelations that the Sindh Building Control Authority had previously declared the building dangerous and issued multiple notices over the last two years, urging its evacuation — notices that reportedly went unheeded.
