Sindh imposes section 144 from 1st to 10th Muharram

The Sindh government has imposed Section 144 across the province, including Karachi, from 1st to 10th Muharram in view of security concerns during the Islamic month of mourning. A formal notification has been issued to this effect.

According to the notification, carrying of licensed weapons will be strictly prohibited during this period, and all arms permits will remain suspended. Moreover, a complete ban on pillion riding will be enforced on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

The use of drones or heli-cams without prior permission will also be strictly prohibited, especially during religious gatherings and processions. Unlawful use of loudspeakers will be banned as well.

Authorities said these measures are aimed at ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order. Strict legal action will be taken against violators of these restrictions.

Sindh issues security guidelines for Muharram 2025

In addition to the imposition of Section 144, the Sindh government has issued comprehensive security directives for Muharram 2025.

According to the official notification, organising processions without permission, wall chalking, and delivering provocative speeches have all been banned. Organisers must obtain prior security clearance before conducting any religious procession.

The sale and distribution of inflammatory audio or video content have been strictly banned. Religious scholars will only be allowed to deliver speeches with prior approval from the provincial authorities.

A code of conduct has been issued for the use of loudspeakers during processions. Security surveillance will be intensified along procession routes, including monitoring of hotels, markets, and buildings. Hospitals have been placed on high alert, and the availability of ambulances and fire tenders has been made mandatory.

Full-proof security will be ensured at sensitive Imambargahs and mosques, with heavy deployment of police, Rangers, and female security personnel.

Instructions have also been issued to install signal jammers and carry out drone surveillance along procession routes. All routes will be thoroughly swept and sealed before processions begin.

The government has also ordered strict monitoring of individuals listed under the Fourth Schedule and close surveillance of suspicious elements. Only designated officials will be allowed to speak to the media during Muharram. Peace committees will be activated, and efforts will be made to promote sectarian harmony across the province.
