Trump administration officials told congressional staff in private briefings on Sunday that U.S. intelligence did not show Iran was preparing a preemptive strike against the United States, three people familiar with the matter said, according to the Associated Press.

Officials instead cited a broader regional threat from Iran’s missiles and proxy forces, though one person said they described those forces as posing an imminent threat to U.S. personnel and allies.

The officials offered no clarity on the next steps after the joint U.S.-Israeli operation. All spoke on condition of anonymity.

Details of the briefing were first reported by Politico. The White House and Pentagon did not immediately comment.

The private message contrasted with public remarks by President Donald Trump, who said the strikes aimed to eliminate imminent threats from Iran’s regime.

The White House said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Gen. Dan Caine will brief Congress on Tuesday.

U.S. and Israeli authorities tracked senior Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for weeks before near-simultaneous strikes at three locations within a minute killed Khamenei and about 40 senior figures, including the Revolutionary Guard chief and defence minister, an Israeli military official and another person, told the Associated Press. The CIA shared intelligence that helped set the timing, one person said.

Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said U.S.-Israeli intelligence ties are historically strong but raised concerns about the strikes’ justification and risks. The military said three U.S. troops were killed.

A senior White House official said Iran’s “new potential leadership” signalled openness to talks. Trump told The Atlantic he had agreed to speak with them, but said the military operation would continue until U.S. objectives are achieved.
