Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been killed in joint US and Israeli air strikes, Iranian state media announced in the early hours of Sunday.

State media confirmed Khamenei’s death and announced seven days of nationwide closure and 40 days of national mourning across Iran.

The reports added that Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter were also killed in the attacks.

Israeli media reported that the Supreme Leader had been inside an underground bunker with several associates when approximately 30 bombs were dropped on his compound.

Dozens of his aides were also reported killed.

Earlier, senior Israeli officials claimed that Khamenei’s body had been recovered following the strikes.

British media outlets, citing Israeli officials, also reported that his body had been found.

US officials said they believe Khamenei and between five and ten senior Iranian leaders were killed in the Israeli strikes on the compound.

The developments come a day after US and Israeli attacks on Iran reportedly left 201 Iranian civilians dead and 747 injured.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump also claimed that Khamenei had been killed.

In a statement posted on social media, Trump declared that “Ayatollah Khamenei has been eliminated,” calling it “the greatest opportunity for the Iranian people to reclaim their country.”

He added that Khamenei’s death represented justice not only for the Iranian people but for the world, and said heavy bombing of Iran would continue until objectives were achieved.

Trump further stated that Khamenei could not evade US intelligence and tracking systems, saying that joint US-Israeli efforts had left him and his associates with no means of escape.

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry had claimed that the Supreme Leader and President Masoud Pezeshkian were safe and that Khamenei was directing the war effort.

Khamenei’s office had also accused Israel and the US of waging psychological warfare.
