Army secures railway tracks, trains amid heavy snowfall in Balochistan
The Pakistan Army has been deployed to secure railway tracks and passenger trains in Balochistan amid heavy snowfall and harsh weather, ensuring the safety of travellers on key routes including the Jaffar Express and Bolan Express, officials said on Monday.
Despite severe cold, snowfall and difficult terrain, army personnel are maintaining round-the-clock security of railway lines and trains, officials said. The deployment comes as security forces continue to face terrorism threats alongside extreme weather conditions.
Officials said soldiers remain vigilant on railway security duties without interruption, braving freezing temperatures and snowfall to protect passengers and critical rail infrastructure. Security arrangements on railway lines are being maintained without compromise, they added.
Meanwhile, widespread rain and snowfall across Balochistan have intensified cold conditions and disrupted daily life, particularly in northern and upper districts. Roof collapse incidents linked to the weather have left one person dead and four others injured.
According to authorities, a fresh system of strong westerly winds from Iran has triggered continued rain and snowfall in most parts of the province, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures. Several link roads have been affected, causing travel difficulties.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported around five inches of snowfall in Qalat and 0.5 inches in Quetta, resulting in slippery conditions in many areas.
Ziarat recorded a temperature of minus 8 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest place in the province.
In Quetta, one person was killed and two others injured when a house roof collapsed.
In Duki district, four people, including a shopkeeper, were injured after the roof of a shop caved in. The injured were shifted to hospitals for treatment.
Light to moderate snowfall continues in Quetta, Mastung, Qalat, Pishin, Chaman, Qila Abdullah, Ziarat and Zhob, while rain has been recorded in Gwadar, Jiwani, Pasni, Ormara, Turbat, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Chagai and Kharan.
Rainfall data showed Qalat receiving the highest 34 millimetres of rain, followed by 17 mm in Ziarat and 15 mm in Dalbandin. Snow accumulation has affected traffic on the N-50 highway linking Balochistan with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while vehicle movement remains slow at Kojak Top on the Quetta–Chaman road and at Lakpass on the Quetta–Karachi highway.
Slippery conditions were also reported on routes connecting Balochistan with Sindh, particularly in Kolpur and Dasht areas. Authorities have advised travellers to exercise caution.
Teams from the National Highway Authority (NHA), Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and district administrations are engaged in snow clearance and salt spreading using heavy machinery.
Officials said all major highways remain open but urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel. The PMD has warned of heavy rain and possible flash flooding in streams in southern Balochistan over the next 12 hours, while snowfall is likely to continue tomorrow in and around Quetta, Ziarat, Qalat, Chaman and Pishin.
