Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated Pakistan’s first-ever Green Policing Unit featuring electric vehicles, marking a major milestone in eco-friendly policing in the province.

During the ceremony, Maryam Nawaz personally inspected the unit’s state-of-the-art electric patrol vehicle and even drove it herself to assess its performance.

She was given a detailed briefing on the Green Policing Unit and the electric vehicles, which highlighted that Lahore will, for the first time, deploy modern BYD electric vehicles for police patrolling.

The eco-friendly patrol vehicles have a range of 410km per charge and can be fast-charged from 30 to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes.

Each vehicle comes equipped with advanced surveillance systems, police lights, 360-degree cameras, and modern speed detection equipment.

Officials noted that the province’s 103 conventional patrolling vehicles consume roughly 28,000 litres of fuel monthly, costing the government around Rs7.42 million.

The introduction of electric vehicles is expected to save approximately 4,500 litres of fuel per vehicle annually, lower operational costs, and achieve zero carbon emissions.

Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to gradually expand the number of electric vehicles in the Green Policing Unit and implement the initiative across other districts of Punjab in a phased manner.

She said the move toward electric policing would not only reduce fuel expenses and carbon emissions but also reflect the government’s vision of clean air and good governance.
