Punjab government lauded for cracking down on extremism, violence
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday praised the provincial government’s efforts to curb extremism and incitement to violence, directing law enforcement agencies to remain on high alert to maintain peace and security.
In a high-level law-and-order meeting, authorities briefed the chief minister that networks of terrorists, extremists, and hate-based groups, including Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), have been effectively dismantled.
Officials reported recovering advanced weapons, thousands of bullets, bulletproof jackets, and other combat equipment from TLP hideouts.
The briefing also highlighted that funding streams used to incite unrest under the guise of protests have been blocked.
Assets worth Rs23.40 billion belonging to the banned extremist group, including 92 bank accounts and digital wallets such as JazzCash, have been frozen. Cases have been registered against nine key financiers of the proscribed organization.
The meeting decided that the Punjab government will urge the federal government to implement uniform action against extremist groups across all provinces.
CM Maryam emphasised that combing operations must continue uninterrupted. Authorities added that 31 FIRs have been registered for sharing social media content harmful to national security.
Officials further briefed that more than 61,000 forms have been distributed for the registration of mosques and imams, with over 50,000 imams voluntarily registering, an 82% completion rate.
Five major Wifaq-ul-Madaris boards have expressed support for the initiative, strengthening collaboration between religious leadership and the government to promote peace.
The chief minister directed authorities to ensure respectful and facilitative engagement with imams, noting that religious leaders should not be burdened or compelled to solicit donations.
She also underscored that wall-chalking will not be tolerated anywhere in Punjab and ordered all Deputy Commissioners to enforce the ban strictly.
The meeting approved the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for weapons management across the province.
In light of the recent Islamabad attack, the chief minister called for enhanced district-level surveillance, including drone monitoring, to detect harassment and ensure swift action.
