Bumrah faces ICC review after offensive comments at SA captain during Kolkata Test

Audio clip of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah mocking South Africa’s Temba Bavuma goes viral, raising conduct concerns under ICC regulations

The first day of the ongoing Test between India and South Africa was marred by controversy after Indian players allegedly made derogatory remarks toward South African captain Temba Bavuma.

A viral audio clip captured on the stump microphone reportedly records Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah mocking Bavuma’s height while using inappropriate language.

The incident occurred during an LBW appeal against Bavuma.

After the umpire rejected the appeal, Bumrah and teammates were heard discussing whether to take the DRS.

During the conversation, Bumrah is alleged to have commented on Bavuma’s stature, saying “Bona bhi hai” along with offensive words. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant appeared to repeat the remark, further fuelling online debate.

The clip quickly went viral across social media platforms, prompting strong reactions from cricket fans worldwide.

Experts suggest that Bumrah’s comments could fall under Level 1 violations of the ICC Code of Conduct (Article 2.1.4), which could result in a reprimand, a fine, or one to two demerit points.

If found guilty, the penalty could escalate to a Level 2 violation, carrying fines of 50-100% of match fees and potential suspension for up to two matches.

The final decision, however, rests with the match referee, who may consider context, whether the remarks were aimed at Bavuma personally or merely about the ball’s bounce.

Bumrah recently received a demerit point for a Level 1 ICC Code of Conduct violation during the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan.

Under ICC rules, accumulating four demerit points within 24 months converts them into suspension points, potentially leading to a ban for a Test match or two limited-overs fixtures.

The ICC is yet to announce whether it will take formal action following the Kolkata incident.
