Mehwish Hayat calls for stronger female representation in Pakistani media
Actor Mehwish Hayat wants her career and choice of roles to inspire young women, urging filmmakers to tell more women-centric stories in Pakistani dramas and films, she said.
Speaking on a recent podcast, Hayat discussed her creative journey, selective approach to acting, and long-term goals.
She said that although she has appeared in relatively few projects, the quality and substance of her work have ensured her recognition in the entertainment industry.
“I usually do only one project a year, but that one project stands out and keeps my work memorable,” said Hayat, known for taking on emotionally demanding and complex characters.
She claimed that directors usually seek her for challenging roles and that she appreciates assignments that test her creativity.
Hayat also utilised the debate to emphasise the importance of stronger female storylines in Pakistani media, encouraging authors and producers to depict women as ambitious and talented workers.
“Pakistani media should show women in roles that inspire others to move forward,” she said, naming police officers, doctors, and lawyers as examples that may pique viewers’ interest.
Reflecting on her more than decade-long career, Hayat said the impact of her performances makes it feel as though she has been acting for much longer.
“I’ve been in this field for around 12 to 15 years, but people feel it’s been 20 because of the influence of my work,” she said.
Looking ahead, she expressed optimism about continuing in show business for another two decades, reaffirming her belief that her work should serve a greater purpose.
“I want girls who look up to me to find inspiration and motivation to excel,” she told me.
Hayat’s comments reflect her ongoing commitment to women’s empowerment and to playing roles that challenge traditional stereotypes.
Hayat’s carefully chosen activities, which combine art with advocacy in Pakistan’s fast-expanding entertainment sector, have helped her establish herself as a performer and role model.
