PTI Senator Saifullah Abro resigns after backing 27th amendment

Lawmaker praises Field Marshal Asim Munir's role in Pak-India war

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Saifullah Abro on Monday submitted his resignation from the Senate after voting in favour of the 27th constitutional amendment.

Addressing the house, Abro said, “I am resigning from my Senate membership today.”

In response, Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani remarked that he could be made senator again if he wished.

Abro praised Pakistan Army’s role in the India-Pakistan war, saying that the country’s victory was a matter of pride for all Pakistanis.

He added that US President Donald Trump had shown greater respect to Pakistan’s Field Marshal than any other president or prime minister.

Senator Abro praised the Pakistan Army and Field Marshal Asim Munir in his speech, stating that the victory in the India-Pakistan war was a matter of national pride.

Abro said, “I voted for the amendment because of the Field Marshal and the Pakistan Armed Forces. I came to vote because of General Asim Munir.”

He added that US President Donald Trump showed extraordinary respect to Field Marshal Munir, more than any president or prime minister.

Abro criticised some lawmakers’ attitude, saying, “First, learn ethics. Legislation happens in every era; no one has a monopoly. When our government comes, Ali Zafar will introduce legislation. Every government brings constitutional amendments in its term.”

The senator also expressed grievances over PTI’s behaviour during the 26th constitutional amendment, stating, “At that time, 10 members of my family were taken into custody, and the party did not raise its voice for me. After the amendment, a reference was filed against me in the Election Commission.”

An interesting moment occurred during the session when Abro appeared in the chamber just before the voting on the amendment.

PTI Senator Flak Naz Chitrali asked him, ‘Why are you standing?’ to which Abro gave a brief but pointed reply: “Compulsion.”

Sources said there was concern in PTI circles ahead of the vote as the party was unable to reach two senators from Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Party insiders said both senators were “missing,” with no information about their whereabouts.

Abro’s sudden presence in the Senate reignited internal debate within PTI.

Party leaders said they were taking notice of the matter, while government members described the development as a “political move.”

Notably, during the 27th Constitutional Amendment vote, PTI Senator Saifullah Abro and JUI-F Senator Ahmed Khan voted in favour of the amendment, allowing it to pass despite the opposition walkout.
