27th Amendment: Govt secures two-thirds majority in Senate, even without JUI-F support
The federal government has secured a two-thirds majority in the Senate to pass the 27th Constitutional Amendment, sources said on Tuesday, marking another key step after achieving majority support in the National Assembly.
According to parliamentary sources, the Senate currently comprises 96 members, and the ruling coalition now commands the backing of 65 senators, comfortably surpassing the required two-thirds threshold.
The opposition, on the other hand, holds the support of 29 members.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) remains the largest component of the ruling alliance in the upper house with 26 senators, followed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with 20, which rises to 21 with Senator Hafiz Abdul Karim.
Among allied parties, the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) has four senators, while the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and the Awami National Party (ANP) have three senators each.
The National Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) hold one seat each.
The ANP has officially announced its support for the government’s amendment bill, strengthening the coalition’s position in the Senate.
In addition, independent senators Mohsin Naqvi, Faisal Vawda, Muhammad Abdul Qadir, Anwaarul Haq Kakar, Naseema Ehsan, and Asad Qasim are also expected to vote in favour of the 27th Amendment.
Meanwhile, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), which has seven senators, has yet to back the amendment, but sources said the government’s majority is now sufficient to ensure its passage even without JUI-F’s support.
On the opposition benches, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) holds 14 seats, while Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) and the Sunni Ittehad Council have one senator each.
The opposition also enjoys support from seven independent senators, though Murad Saeed, nominated by PTI, has not yet taken the oath as senator.
Political observers said the government is now well-positioned to get the amendment approved from the upper house, following its success in the lower house.
With the ANP’s support and multiple independents aligning with the ruling bloc, the 27th Constitutional Amendment appears poised for smooth passage in both houses of Parliament.
