Emirates has introduced a next-generation biometric travel system that allows passengers to move through Dubai International Airport (DXB) using only facial recognition, no passport or boarding pass required, according to media reports.

The airline has invested AED 85 million to install more than 200 biometrics-enabled cameras across Terminal 3, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigner Affairs – Dubai (GDRFAD), Gulf News reported.

The system uses powerful cameras capable of recognising a passenger’s biometric profile from one metre away, cutting processing times at check-in, immigration, lounges, and boarding gates.

“With our latest Biometrics Path development, Emirates has invested in further innovations to enhance the customer experience, providing remarkable speed, efficiency, and accuracy,” said Adel al Redha, Emirates’ deputy president and COO.

“Since 2017, we have worked with GDRFA Dubai to implement the latest technologies and ensure our customers enjoy a seamless journey.”

Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, director general of GDRFA Dubai, said the collaboration reflects the UAE’s focus on digital innovation.

“Together, we are shaping a travel experience that reflects Dubai’s reputation for efficiency, hospitality, and smart governance,” he noted.

How the system works

Register

Emirates passengers aged 18 and above can register via the Emirates app, self-service kiosks, or check-in desks. Registration requires an Emirates Skywards profile and passport scan to match data with the GDRFAD database.

Biometric check-in

Once registered, travellers can use facial recognition at self-service kiosks and will soon be able to use it for flight connections.

Smart gates

Passengers can pass through immigration in seconds by stepping into GDRFAD-managed smart gates. UAE citizens, residents, GCC nationals, and biometric-passport visitors are eligible.

Lounge access and boarding

Eligible travellers can enter Emirates lounges and board selected flights simply by looking at a camera. Biometric boarding gates are currently available in Concourses A, B, and C, with more to follow.

Emirates said the biometric system provides a fast, secure, and contactless airport experience, aligning with Dubai’s goal of becoming the world’s leading smart travel hub.
