Newborn ‘sold’ over unpaid hospital bills in Karachi

Police recover baby, seal private hospital; two suspects still at large

A shocking incident has come to light in Karachi’s Memon Goth area, where a private hospital allegedly sold a newborn after the parents failed to pay medical expenses.

According to police, the hospital administration allegedly sold the infant under the pretext of recovering dues.

However, the police later recovered the baby and handed him back to his parents.

The incident occurred on October 7 at a private hospital in Memon Goth, while a formal case was registered on Saturday.

Police said the FIR was lodged on the complaint of the newborn’s father.

Investigations are underway, though no arrests have been made so far.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir Abdul Khaliq Pirzada said the newborn was safely reunited with the parents.

He added that the hospital where the baby was born has been sealed, while the two main suspects — Dr Zahra and a woman named Shama Baloch, who allegedly bought the baby — remained at large.

Investigations revealed that Shama Baloch, who had paid the hospital expenses, was actually an employee of the same hospital.

Along with Dr Zahra, she allegedly sold the newborn in Punjab.

Police said raids were being conducted to arrest the suspects, and a thorough investigation into the incident is ongoing.
