Salman Mirza dedicates match-winning performance to his mother
Pakistan’s young fast bowler Salman Mirza has said that whether or not he is part of the playing XI, he always aims to perform well — and when that performance helps the team win, “the joy doubles”.
Speaking at a press conference after delivering a match-winning spell in the second T20 International against South Africa at Gaddafi Stadium on Friday night, Salman said he always tries to execute the plans given by the coaches whenever he gets a chance to play.
“I dedicate today’s performance to my mother. It’s because of her prayers that I’ve reached this stage,” Salman said.
The pacer added that there’s no pressure about where you play: “Once you step onto the field, you quickly understand what kind of bowling is needed.”
Salman Mirza, who also represents Lahore Qalandars in the PSL, said his experience of playing on the home ground gave him a clear advantage.
“I’m familiar with the conditions here, and the home crowd’s support really boosts morale,” he said.
Commenting on fielding lapses, Salman noted that a dropped catch followed by a boundary or six can create pressure, “but staying composed in those moments is very important”.
Earlier, Pakistan outclassed South Africa by nine wickets in the second T20 International at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, to level the series 1-1.
Batting first, South Africa set Pakistan a modest target of 111 runs, which the home side chased down with ease, losing just one wicket.
Faheem Ashraf was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 for 23, while Salman Mirza claimed 3 wickets for 14 runs.
South Africa coach praises Salman Mirza
South Africa’s head coach Albie Morkel praised Pakistan’s performance, acknowledging that early wickets proved decisive.
“Pakistan created pressure by taking wickets early in the innings, and Salman Mirza bowled exceptionally well. There’s no doubt he turned out to be Pakistan’s trump card,” Morkel said at the post-match press conference.
He added that South Africa struggled to build partnerships after losing key wickets in the powerplay.
“Pakistan played better cricket in the second match, and we couldn’t post a big score because we failed to form solid partnerships,” he admitted.
