MQM-P moves adjournment motion in Sindh Assembly over e-challan issue
Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) lawmaker Adil Askari on Wednesday submitted an adjournment motion in the Sindh Assembly, drawing attention to what he termed the serious issue of e-challans being imposed on citizens despite the lack of basic traffic management and road safety measures.
In his motion, Askari said citizens were being fined under an unfair system even though the province’s roads were broken, poorly managed, and riddled with encroachments that disrupted traffic flow.
He pointed out that the absence of road markings, zebra crossings, and traffic signboards had made driving unsafe, while the lack of an efficient public transport system had worsened the situation.
The MQM-P lawmaker said imposing electronic challans in such conditions was “deeply unjust” and urged the provincial government to take immediate steps to improve road infrastructure, ensure road safety, and provide viable transport options before penalising commuters.
He stressed that the matter required urgent attention from the Sindh Assembly.
Over 6,000 fines issued in two days
The newly launched e-challan system for traffic violations in Karachi has turned into a nightmare for motorists, with more than 6,000 fines issued in just two days and thousands more being processed.
The total amount of penalties has already exceeded Rs35 million.
According to the traffic police, most challans were issued for overspeeding, tinted windows, not wearing seat belts, and signal violations.
Over 500 tickets were issued to motorcyclists riding without helmets.
