The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Police Karachi, Peer Muhammad Shah, said on Wednesday that more than 6,500 e-challans have been issued across the city during the past two days.

Speaking to Aaj News, Shah said each challan is issued separately for every vehicle, making it difficult to determine the total amount of fines collected so far.

He explained that fines for motorcycles can go up to Rs5,000, while larger vehicles face penalties of up to Rs20,000. In certain cases, the amount can even reach Rs100,000.

The DIG announced a strict campaign against vehicles with missing or fake number plates, saying that FIRs will be filed against such vehicles.

“A vehicle will not be released until its number plate is verified or updated,” he warned.

Shah emphasised that it is the seller’s responsibility to complete all legal formalities when selling a vehicle.

Those who have already sold their vehicles have been advised to contact the Excise Department and provide a copy of their CNIC so that records can be updated in the system.

He said e-challans are being issued for red-light violations, failure to wear seat belts, overspeeding, wrong-way driving, using mobile phones while driving, and motorcyclists violating the left-lane rule.

So far, tickets have been issued under 8 to 10 different categories.

According to the DIG, 1,076 cameras have been installed across Karachi, with plans to increase the number to 12,000 in the coming months.

Additionally, 10,000 trackers will be integrated into the system. Most violations, he added, are being recorded on main thoroughfares such as Sharea Faisal, Baloch Colony, Fauzia Wahab Flyover, and Drigh Road.

For citizens’ convenience, 11 facilitation centres have been set up across the city to address public complaints and issues related to e-challans.

Peer Muhammad Shah said the system will be expanded to the entire Sindh province within a month.

More than 100 trained young personnel are already operating under the programme.

He stressed that the purpose of the e-challan system is to promote safe and law-abiding driving habits among citizens, adding that the initiative will significantly improve traffic discipline across Sindh in the near future.
