Hefty fine amount under new e-challan system shocks Karachi motorists

Violators to face up to Rs100,000 penalties; repeated offences to lead to licence and CNIC suspension

Citizens of Karachi are reeling after the launch of a new e-ticketing traffic system that has brought massive fines for even minor violations.

The Karachi Traffic Police have begun issuing automated e-challans for a wide range of offences, leaving many motorists stunned at the new penalty structure.

Under the revised system, motorcyclists exceeding speed limits will face a fine of Rs5,000, while car and jeep drivers will pay Rs10,000.

Speeding by light transport vehicles (LTVs) will cost Rs15,000, and dumpers, trailers, or buses caught speeding will face a Rs20,000 fine.

Vehicles carrying excess loads could be fined up to Rs50,000.

For wrong-way driving, fines are equally harsh — Rs25,000 for motorcycles, Rs30,000 for cars, Rs50,000 for jeeps, and a staggering Rs100,000 for trucks, dumpers, or trailers.

Failing to give way to ambulances or emergency vehicles will incur fines ranging from Rs5,000 to Rs20,000, while dangerous overtaking and cutting across traffic lanes can result in penalties of up to Rs20,000.

Earlier, police announced that speeding, helmet violations, red-light jumps, one-wheeling, use of tinted glasses, and driving without a licence would also trigger e-challans ranging between Rs5,000 and Rs50,000, along with demerit points on licences.

Traffic police officials said the new automated e-ticketing system, supported by surveillance cameras, aims to enforce discipline and improve road safety.

All challans will be sent directly to the violator’s registered mobile number.

Motorists will have 14 days to pay fines at a 50% discount. After 21 days, full payment will be required, and additional charges will apply thereafter.

In case of non-payment within three months, the driver’s licence will be suspended, and if dues remain unpaid for six months, the National Identity Card (CNIC) will be blocked, officials warned.

Traffic authorities said the system is part of Karachi’s shift towards smart traffic enforcement, ensuring penalties are automatic, traceable, and transparent.
