PTI summons parliamentary party meeting in Peshawar ahead of Senate polls
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has convened a meeting of its parliamentary party at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar this evening (Tuesday) at 7.00pm to finalise its strategy for the upcoming Senate elections scheduled for October 30.
The meeting will be presided over by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and will also deliberate on the issue of his third failed attempt to meet PTI founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail.
All PTI members of the provincial assembly, along with the party’s central and provincial leaders, are expected to attend.
PTI coordinator Senator Ali Zafar had formally submitted the chief minister’s name to the jail authorities for today’s meeting.
Speaking near the Dahgal checkpoint outside Adiala Jail, CM Afridi said the party was filing a contempt of court petition, citing non-compliance with the directives issued by a three-judge bench.
He was also denied a meeting last Thursday, when police stopped him at the Dahgal checkpoint near Adiala Jail.
Despite obtaining permission from the Islamabad High Court to meet the PTI founder, the chief minister was not allowed to proceed to the prison.
He lamented that the Supreme Court had not yet taken up cases about the party’s leader, adding that “our lawyers and we all stand with the judiciary for upholding the Constitution.”
CM Afridi clarified that although he had not yet met the party founder, he continued to receive messages and directions from him.
Later, while talking to the media outside the Supreme Court, the chief minister said that the entire world was witnessing Pakistan’s “constitutional crisis,” adding that key cases, including the £190 million reference, were being deliberately delayed.
He criticised the disregard of judicial orders, saying, “The day justice prevails in Pakistan, the innocent will walk free.”
CM Afridi also mentioned that the corps commander had recently visited the Chief Minister’s Secretariat to convey his felicitations.
