Azad Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for a possible change in leadership as Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq considers whether to step down or confront a no-confidence motion.

According to sources, the change in government in AJK is expected either through the prime minister’s resignation or a successful no-confidence move, with consultations underway on both options.

A final decision on Anwar-ul-Haq’s political future is likely within the next 48 hours.

The AJK Legislative Assembly comprises 52 members, with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) requiring the support of at least 27 lawmakers to form a government.

According to the current party position, the PPP holds 17 seats, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has nine, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has four, while the Muslim Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Party have one seat each.

Additionally, a forward bloc consisting of 20 members is also part of the assembly.

With PML-N’s support, the PPP’s tally rises to 26, leaving the party just one seat short of the simple majority needed.

The PPP leadership has intensified contacts with members of the forward bloc to secure the required numbers for government formation.

PPP leaders are holding consultations to finalise their strategy, as major political developments are anticipated in the coming days.
