Pakistan and Iran have agreed to form a joint committee for the swift resolution of issues hampering border trade and logistics between the two countries, reaffirming their commitment to deepening economic cooperation and regional connectivity.

The understanding was reached during a meeting between Iran’s Minister for Roads and Urban Development, Ms Farzaneh Sadegh, and Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Communications, Abdul Aleem Khan, according to an official statement issued on Saturday.

The newly formed committee, comprising officials from both sides, will submit its final report within a week, focusing on resolving logistical hurdles faced by Iranian commercial trucks entering Pakistan.

During her visit, the Iranian minister also met Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi and Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan, where both sides held detailed discussions on trade, connectivity, and transport cooperation.

Aleem Khan assured that Pakistan would take all necessary measures to facilitate the smooth movement of Iranian trade convoys. He directed the National Logistics Cell (NLC), Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and other relevant authorities to ensure prompt clearance of Iranian trucks.

He said Pakistan is committed to promoting regional trade and offering Iran access to trade routes linking China and other countries.

“It is encouraging to see the revival of close cooperation between the two brotherly nations, which will positively impact regional development,” he added.

Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi proposed expediting the implementation of a Pakistan–Iran rail agreement signed in September, announcing that the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Train Project will be reviewed in December.

Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan expressed Pakistan’s desire to enhance bilateral trade volume with Iran to $10 billion.

Iranian Minister Farzaneh Sadegh thanked Pakistan for organising the meeting at short notice and conveyed her government’s interest in expanding cooperation in maritime affairs through Chabahar and Gwadar ports.

She said Iran’s President attaches great importance to strengthening ties with Pakistan and termed the Regional Transport Ministers’ Conference in Islamabad a highly encouraging development.
