Veteran Bollywood actor Satish Shah passes away at 74 after prolonged illness
Veteran Bollywood actor Satish Shah passed away at the age of 74 in Mumbai after a prolonged battle with kidney disease, Indian media reported on Saturday.
According to reports, the actor was admitted to a local hospital in Mumbai after his condition deteriorated at home, but he could not survive. His final rites will be performed in Mumbai tomorrow (Sunday).
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit was the first to confirm the news, sharing Shah’s picture and a heartfelt message on Instagram: “Sad and shocked to inform you that our dear friend and a great actor Satish Shah has expired few hours ago due to kidney failure. He was rushed to Hinduja hospital where he breathed his last.”
In a video, Pandit said, “I would like to share some very sad news. Our friend, a great actor, Satish Shah, passed away due to kidney failure. He suddenly fell ill at home and was rushed to Hinduja Hospital, Shivaji Park, where he breathed his last. His body will be brought to his Bandra residence.”
He added, “It’s a huge loss to our industry. I have worked a lot with Satish — he was not only a fine actor but a wonderful human being.”
Satish Shah began his acting career in the 1970s and rose to fame with the 1983 cult classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, a film that established him as one of Indian cinema’s most versatile comic actors.
Over the decades, he appeared alongside top stars including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and Saif Ali Khan.
Shah also made a mark on television, most notably through the hit sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, in which he played 55 different characters in 55 episodes — a performance that remains unmatched in Indian television history.
He was last seen in the 2017 reboot of the popular show Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. The actor is survived by his wife, designer Madhu Shah.
