Governor Punjab signs Local Government Act 2025, paving way for local body elections
The final hurdle in the implementation of the Punjab Local Government Act 2025 has been removed as Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider formally signed the bill into law.
According to official sources, the Punjab Assembly Secretariat had sent the approved draft of the Act to the Governor for endorsement.
With his signature, all legal obstacles to holding local government elections have now been cleared.
Following the Governor’s approval, a gazette notification will be issued and sent by the Punjab government to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The ECP will then begin the process of delimitation and constituency marking under the new law.
Sources said the Election Commission has already decided to conduct the local government elections in December 2025.
Experts believe the enactment of the new Local Government Act will help strengthen the local governance system in Punjab and facilitate the transfer of power to the grassroots level.
Earlier, Special Secretary Local Government met Governor Sardar Saleem Haider and briefed him on the five-year Local Government Act.
