Pakistan launches first hyperspectral satellite HS-1 in major space milestone
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has successfully launched the country’s first Hyperspectral Satellite (HS-1) from the Chinese Satellite Launch Centre, as confirmed by the official statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.
HS-1 is equipped with advanced hyperspectral imaging technology, capable of capturing data across hundreds of narrow spectral bands. This cutting-edge capability enables precise monitoring and analysis of land use, vegetation health, water resources, and urban development.
According to the statement, “The satellite is expected to significantly enhance national capacities in areas such as precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management. Its high-resolution data will support improved resource management and strengthen Pakistan’s resilience to climate-related challenges.”
Beyond its environmental and developmental applications, HS-1 will also contribute to major strategic initiatives, particularly the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The satellite will play a crucial role in identifying geo-hazard risks and promoting sustainable infrastructure development along the corridor.
“The successful launch of HS-1 marks a pivotal step forward in Pakistan’s space program and reaffirms SUPARCO’s commitment to leveraging space technology for national development,” said the statement.
It further noted, “This achievement also highlights the long-standing collaboration between Pakistan and China in the peaceful exploration of space and its application for socioeconomic progress.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar praised the joint efforts of both countries’ scientific communities, stating:
“I commend the scientists and technical teams from Pakistan and China working on HS-1 for their commitment, professional excellence and exemplary cooperation.”
The launch of HS-1 places Pakistan among a growing group of nations equipped with operational hyperspectral imaging satellites. With this success, SUPARCO reinforces its role as a key player in advancing space technology for environmental stewardship, disaster preparedness, and regional development.
