Section 144 imposed across Punjab till Saturday amid security concerns
The Punjab government on Thursday imposed Section 144 across the province till Saturday (October 18) to maintain law and order in view of prevailing security concerns.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, all types of public gatherings, rallies, protests, and sit-ins have been banned during this period.
The order also prohibits the display of weapons and the use of loudspeakers, except for the call to prayer (Azaan) and Friday sermons.
Similarly, the gathering of more than four people at public places has been restricted, while the publication or distribution of inflammatory, sectarian, or hate material has been strictly banned.
Officials said the decision was taken to prevent any untoward incident and ensure public safety and peace across the province.
The notification directed the concerned authorities to strictly enforce the restrictions and take legal action against any violation of the order.
Punjab IG warns
Inspector General of Police Punjab Dr Usman Anwar warned that no one will be allowed to take to the streets under the pretext of strikes or take the law into their own hands, and vowed strict action to protect citizens’ lives, property and public order.
Speaking during a security meeting, the IG said authorities will ensure full enforcement of the law and deal with rioters and miscreants with an “iron hand” if they engage in vandalism, violence or unrest.
He warned that offenders will face prosecution under the Anti-Terrorism Act, carrying penalties of 10 to 14 years’ imprisonment for serious offences.
The police chief said dozens of wanted suspects under Section 7 of the ATA will be arrested using artificial-intelligence-based technologies, including the FaceTrace app and AI features that identify vehicle and motorcycle number plates for immediate apprehension.
To enforce the orders, 27,000 Punjab police officers and personnel will be deployed on the roads, while 12,000 Special Branch officers have been tasked with locating and arresting troublemakers, the IG added.
Officials said the measures aim to preempt unrest, protect public life and property, and ensure strict adherence to law and order across the province.
