Former Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani passes away in Karachi
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and Former speaker of Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani passed away on Wednesday in a private hospital in Karachi.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed deep sorrow and grief over Durrani’s demise, calling him a “sincere, loyal, and principled leader of the PPP.”
He said Agha Siraj Durrani played a vital role in strengthening democracy and the Sindh Assembly and would always be remembered for his services to the province. The chief minister also offered condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for patience and strength for them.
President Asif Ali Zardari also expressed profound grief over the passing of Agha Siraj Durrani, paying tribute to his political and democratic services.
Agha Siraj Durrani was born on October 5, 1953, in Garhi Yasin, Shikarpur district. He belonged to a prominent political family of Sindh.
Durrani received his early education from St. Patrick’s High School, Karachi, before earning a Bachelor of Commerce and later an LLB degree from Sindh Muslim Law College.
He began his political career in the 1980s, contesting his first election in 1985, and formally joined the Pakistan Peoples Party in 1988, winning his first provincial assembly seat the same year.
Agha Siraj Durrani was elected Speaker of the Sindh Assembly on May 31, 2013, and held the position until February 25, 2024, one of the longest-serving speakers in the province’s history.
During his tenure, he also served as acting Governor of Sindh on several occasions.
His leadership in the Assembly was marked by his assertive style and deep understanding of parliamentary traditions.
