SHC seeks detailed health report of Karachi Zoo bear ‘Rano’ by Oct 14
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday sought a detailed health report of the bear “Rano” from the Karachi Zoo administration by October 14, following a petition highlighting the animal’s deteriorating condition and alleged violation of wildlife laws.
During the hearing, the court issued notices to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), the Director of Karachi Zoo, and the Secretary of the Conservator Wildlife, directing them to submit comprehensive reports on Rano’s health and living conditions.
The petition stated that the Senior Director of the Zoo had earlier formed a committee to assess Rano’s well-being.
In its report submitted on January 17, 2025, the committee found that the bear was under severe psychological stress and recommended its relocation to a more natural environment.
The petitioner argued that keeping Rano confined at the Karachi Zoo violates Section 47 of the Sindh Wildlife Act, which prohibits the captivity of wild animals under inhumane conditions.
The court was also reminded that in a previous case, it had ordered the zoo authorities to ensure proper maintenance of Rano’s enclosure — including installation of air coolers and regular cleaning of the pool.
The petition further contended that Rano’s continued confinement breaches Articles 9 and 9-A of the Constitution, which guarantee the right to life and liberty, urging the court to direct authorities to relocate the animal in line with the committee’s earlier recommendations.
The court adjourned the hearing until October 14, instructing all relevant departments to file their detailed responses before the next session.
